With a toddler. We took things slow as we were travelling with our 22 month old toddler

We flew from Newcastle airport into Dubrovnik in Croatia as it was a direct flight. The flight was 3 hours long. We picked up a rental car and then made our way across the border into Montenegro.
You will find our Montenegro 5 day itinerary below.
Day one: Budva
Our first stop was Budva and we spent 3 nights here at the Hotel Imperial. This hotel was very family friendly and had a huge play area on site which was open from 10am-10pm. There is also a supervisor monitoring the play area and who can look after your kids everyday but a Thursday.
We had a 1 bedroom apartment with a separate living area so we could relax when our toddler went to bed, meaning we didn’t all have to go to sleep at 7pm!
Best things to do in Budva:
Visit the old town and explore the cobbled streets, Citadela and architecture
Visit Mogren beach
Have a grab'n'go dinner from La Mia with fresh fettucine
Enjoy a drink at Casper's bar
There are also lots of kiosks where you can buy large slices of pizza for around 3.50 euros. They are fresh and delicious and the perfect on the go snack or a toddler evening meal!
Day two: Budva/Sveti Stefan
We visited Sveti Stefan which is only a short 5-10 minute drive from Budva and is well known as being home to a luxurious and private resort. However, this resort has been closed now for 4 years due to a dispute over privitisatin of beaches and land. What once was a bustling, lively resort is now a bit of a ghost town but it is open to the public meaning you can have a glimpse.
We walked from Pržno to Sveti Stefan which was a lovely picturesque walk. There are steps and rocky patches on the beach so it's not entirely pram-friendly (we tackled it with a pram but it would be much easier with a carrier if you're travelling with a baby).
We had lunch in Sveti Stefan before making our way back to Budva, relaxing in our hotel and visiting the old town of Budva once more.

Other restaurant recommendations in Budva include:
Konoba Bocun
Jadran
Caspers Bar (for nibbles)
Citadela
Astoria beach views
Day three: Budva/Petrovac/Lake Skadar
On day three we visited Petrovac and in Petrovac you can see the Petrovac quay and Gradiste monastery.
We hiked from Petrovac along the Rezevici trail which is a 3.9 mile easy trail. It was very picturesque with beautiful views over the beaches and water but you do walk through a lot of tunnels (which is a shame when the sun is shining!). As we left the tunnels however, there were lots of building works going on and we couldn't find the way to continue our hike which was disappointing. We still enjoyed the short amount we managed to do however.
We made our way back to Petrovac and had lunch along the beachfront.
In the afternoon we had a mini roadtrip up to Lake Skadar. The roads are very windy and narrow, they are made for motorbikes rather than cars! You can drive along and find lots of beautiful viewpoints. The lake is huge so you will not be able to drive around it all but you can enjoy some lovely panoramic views of vineyards and vast greenery. You can also take a boat ride along the water.
Day four: Tivat and Kotor
Tivat was our favourite place we visited in Montenegro. It helped that this was one of the only sunny days we had but still, it is absolutely beautiful. We had a lovely, peaceful stroll along the waterfront and sat in the sun with a wine whilst our daughter had lunch. There are designer shops you can splurge in and plenty of fancy bars and restaurants.
You can also visit:
Porto Montenegro
Tivat Promenade
Pine waterfront
Bokka modern restaurant
We were staying in Kotor this evening and on the way from Tivat we stopped at the Kotor Cable Car. This is one of the best attractions in Kotor and our daughter absolutely loved it and still talks about going up the mountain now. You will be amazed by the views and the perfect image of Kotor bay you can see below. At the top of the cable car don't miss the alpine coaster for a thrill and the playarea which is free with your cable car ticket.

We headed back to Kotor for dinner and our recommended restaurants are:
Platanus
Le Catedral Pasta Bar
Konoba Scala Santa seafood
Rooftop terrace Hippocampus
BBQ Tanjga
Konoba Roma for live music
Day five: Kotor and Perast
On our final day in Kotor we attempted to hike St John's Fortress. We started off by walking around the Kotor old town, climbing the old town walls and then picked up some fresh pastries from the supermarket ready to start our hike.
We began our hike but it was stormy weather and the heavens quickly opened and soaked all three of us! We had our toddler in a backpack carrier and somehow she slept through the whole thing, dripping wet. We sheltered under a tree for a while but once we heard the thunder we thought we best get away from the tree before the lightning struck.
So unfortunately we never made it to the top of the fortress but this is where we started the walk: https://redwhiteadventures.com/hiking-in-kotor/
Once we had dried off we spent our afternoon in Perast. In Perast you can take a boat to visit the small island called our lady of the rocks. You can also visit the blue cave. It is a beautiful coastal town and you will be happy enough just walking up and down with an ice cream.
What we missed but wished we'd done
We wished we had time to visit Durmitor national park. Budva to Durmitor is a 2 hour 20 minute drive and we could not fit it into our itinerary. From research there is a lot to do in Durmitor so if we had stayed longer we could have had a night around Durmitor.
In Durmitor we researched the best things to do:
Black/Crno lake
Meandri cehotine viewpoint
Durdevica tara bridge and tara canyon
Durmitor hanging bridges
Bobotuv kuk
Drive the Sedio pass
Next post: 4 days in Corfu
